As Senior Policy Advisor, Duncan is helping Finance Watch develop a vision of a financial system that serves society, as well as advising us on banking matters. Duncan is also involved in building Finance Watch’s networks, developing a local network in Switzerland and helping strengthen our academic networks.

“I believe we need radical new ways of organising society so everyone can live well within planetary limits. The necessary transition can take many forms including making finance serve society. By raising the consciousness of the public, building networks of solidarity and pressuring policy-makers, Finance Watch has an important role to play.

“I started my career by working for 12 years in a major investment bank. I worked in risk control and then in risk management on the fixed income trading floor, heading the team in Europe pricing and hedging derivative counterparty credit risk. I then left banking and completed a doctorate in heterodox political economy, developing a theory of the evolution of banks into derivatives dealers. This led me to work for a while in the Finance Watch secretariat, before combining a part-time research role, first at the University of Leeds and now at Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB), with my current role as an advisor to Finance Watch.”
