Finance Watch Secretary General Thierry Philipponnat today gave evidence at a public hearing of the European Economic and Social Committee entitled “The role of civil society in financial regulation”.

Reforming the European system of financial supervision: strong European supervisory authorities are needed to ensure that consumers, investors and taxpayers are protected from the financial system.
The hearing was organised by the Committee’s ECO section (Economic & Monetary Union & Economic and Social Cohesion) following an EESC decision in January to draw up an own-initiative opinion on How to involve civil society in financial regulation.
Other speakers at today’s event included EC Commissioner for Internal Market and Services Michel Barnier, EESC President Staffan Nilsson, and MEP Markus Ferber.
