This new report from six civil society groups (WWF, E3G, Finance Watch, Friends of the Earth Europe, ShareAction and actionaid) recommends ways to integrate sustainability goals in the Capital Markets Union, in response to the Commission’s mid-term review of the CMU.

Deregulation of equity, bonds and derivatives markets has undermined the primary objective of financial markets: to channel savings and capital to the most promising economic developments, while managing risk adequately.
The report calls for the creation of common definitions and standards to help speed up the development of sustainable finance, and for policymakers to embed the Sustainable Development Goals in financial policymaking, rather than focusing on developing (green) niches.
It builds on Finance Watch’s previous initiatives with civil society partners to link sustainability issues with CMU, including a public statement co-signed by 29 CSOs in September 2015 and an event in the European Parliament co-hosted by nine CSOs and four political groups in June 2016.
